This week, the House voted on eight measures including resolutions (H.J. Res. 130; H.J. Res. 131; S.J. Res. 80) to disapprove of regulations issued by the Bureau of Land Management during the last weeks of the Biden administration; two bills (H.R. 5107; H.R. 5214) that would modify criminal justice laws in Washington, D.C.; a couple of energy bills (H.R. 1949; H.R. 3109); and a resolution denouncing socialism (H. Con. Res. 58).

Markets have begun experiencing further volatility on the heels of new tariff headlines, stronger-than-expected cheese and butter production for June, and softer domestic dairy consumption.

U.S butter and cheese prices remain highly competitive in the global market, and export growth has continued despite new tariff announcements. Domestically, cheese sales are not experiencing the same growth.

On Friday, UNC Conventional members were mailed a letter describing the undated Convention Premium Program. Concurrently, UNC Organic members received an Addendum to the Organic Premium Program.

On March 4, 2025, the Trump administration implemented a 25% tariff on most imports from Canada and Mexico- with a lesser 10% tariff added to Canadian energy products (e.g., crude oil). Tariffs on China were increased to 20% as well.

2/21/25 - THIS WEEK IN CONGRESS: This week, the House is in recess and the Senate voted on the nominations of Howard Lutnick for Secretary of Commerce, Kelly Loeffler to lead the Small Business Administration, Kash Patel for FBI Director, and Jamieson Greer to be the United States Trade Representative, along with votes on a budget resolution.

THE WEEK IN CONGRESS: Last Friday, the House re-elected Rep. Johnson (R-LA) as Speaker and the 119th Congress was sworn into office.

This was the last week of the 118th Congress and the new Congress will convene on January 3, 2025. Our newsletter will resume in the New Year once the 119th Congress is sworn in. In the interim, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

On December 6, 2024, USDA announced the start of a National Milk Testing Strategy (NMTS), which builds on measures we have taken since the start of the High-Path Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 outbreak in dairy cattle.

This week, congressional leaders continued bipartisan negotiations on a continuing resolution (CR) to fund the federal government beyond December 20th.

Last month the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) informed veterinarians, farmers and industry personnel to cease the use of unapproved aspirin to treat lactating dairy cattle.

For the first time in modern history, our Cooperative invited every employee and their families out to one of our member farms. The event was sponsored by the Board of Directors as a way to continue to build the connection between our employees and our farmer-owners.

Upstate Niagara Cooperative, Agri-Mark, and Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Cooperative Association have joined forces to announce the launch of Integrated Dairy Ingredients (IDI), a venture set to streamline the dairy ingredients market.

This global initiative was established in 2001 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to recognize the importance of milk as a global food, and to celebrate the dairy sector.
